Career Design
In the past a career was a lifelong commitment. Over time that concept changed and now we see career as a series of involvements over a lifetime. More often than ever before people start with a career/job and spring from that to another great idea they get. This happens over and over for some people who just keep on generating ideas for things to do.
Other people are less inclined to change careers. They deepen their intensity in the carreer they chose.
And don’t forget the elderly and retired. People are finding out that retirement most often means a pay cut paired with boredom.
So….it makes sense to focus on careers when mental health conditions present. People who suffer from mental health disorders nearly always want something better from their work. Ironically, improving career satisfaction improves mental health. It is all part of the whole person and their desire for some order in their lives.
Career Design includes:
♦ Assessing for mental health conditions
♦ Treating the mental health conditions if they are present
♦ Developing a career history
♦ Discovering interests through discussion and interest inventories
♦ Learning problem solving skills
♦ Learning planning skills
♦ Helping people learn to find community resources
We like watching people get used to the idea of doing something new. Reframing the definition of career lets people see that because they change what they want to do that doesn’t mean they are doing things wrong.
