Assessment in General

Assessment means gathering information from several sources, analyzing this information, and determining the exact nature of the problem.

We start with interviews of the client and relevant family members – spouses, parents, etc.  Yes, we interview children of all ages using our impeccable child appropriate clinical skills to find out as much about their world, from their perspective, as we can.  We take several sessions to do this so we can get to know the client and family well.  Our own observations during these sessions get added to the process.

We also use validated information gathering inventories and questionnaires to support other information and confirm conclusions.

Finally we can mutually define the so called problem.  We have clinical names for problems as well as everyday names.  Even though we need the clinical names to formulate the most efficient route to solutions we usually don’t dwell on these during sessions.

As soon as we have the problem defined we go right to planning solutions.  And now we need more from our clients because……WE don’t design the solutions, the client does.
